Ecosystems and Conservation Biology

How do scientists study ecosystems and grapple with real-world conservation questions?

Learn about ecology and ecosystem dynamics using a systems thinking lens. Authored by world-class experts at the cutting edge of conservation biology, this six-week online course examines how scientists study various ecosystems around the world—from Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, to the Hudson River in New York, to Caribbean coral reefs. Learners will investigate the complex array of factors that inform management efforts, and grapple with real-world conservation questions, such as whether an ecosystem can recover from disruption and what role humans can, and should, play in that recovery.

The relationship between science and technology
Science, technology and innovation each represent a successively larger category of activities which are highly interdependent but distinct. Science contributes to technology in at least six ways: (1) new knowledge which serves as a direct source of ideas for new technological possibilities; (2) source of tools and techniques for more efficient engineering design and a knowledge base for evaluation of feasibility of designs; (3) research instrumentation, laboratory techniques and analytical methods used in research that eventually find their way into design or industrial practices, often through intermediate disciplines; (4) practice of research as a source for development and assimilation of new human skills and capabilities eventually useful for technology; (5) creation of a knowledge base that becomes increasingly important in the assessment of technology in terms of its wider social and environmental impacts; (6) knowledge base that enables more efficient strategies of applied research, development, and refinement of new technologies.

Social distancing brought miSocial distancing brought mighty economies to their knees
The entire world's economy has shrunk dramatically. The pandemic delivered the most severe blow to the U.S. economy since the Great Depression as gross domestic product collapsed and millions of jobs were lost.
"This recession was by far the deepest one in postwar history," Richard Clarida, vice chair of the Federal Reserve, noted in a speech.

Home-School Collaboration, and Communication
Websites: A homework website that provides assignments for the week is very helpful toparents and guardians of students with ADHD. Class news regarding projects and theweek’s instructional topics can also be posted.
Homework Hotline: A homework hotline that gives the assignments for the night andalso provides helpful suggestions for completing them can help families support theirchildren’s work completion.

We should emphasis a point here: ADHD is not caused by bad parenting
Causes for mental disorders are very difficult to pinpoint, but the general consensus is that they are products of the interaction of genetics with the environment.
Certain people who have genes that influence how the brain processes dopamine may be at increased risk for ADHD, but having the genes doesn’t necessarily mean a person will show signs of the condition.
There are a number of things that parents can do or not do that alter a child’s development—and their chances of having ADHD.

What machine learning algorithm predicts
Machine Learning is a concept which allows the machine to learn from examples and experience, and that too without being explicitly programmed.
It is a classification, and not a regression algorithm. It is used to estimate discrete values ( Binary values like 0/1, yes/no, true/false ) based on a given set of independent variable(s). In simple words, it predicts the probability of occurrence of an event by fitting data to a logit function.

The benefits of organic food
How your food is grown or raised can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health as well as the environment.
Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally-grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods.
Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat.
Organic food is often fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives that make it last longer. Organic produce is often (but not always, so watch where it is from) produced on smaller farms near where it is sold.
Organic farming is better for the environment. Organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. Farming without pesticides is also better for nearby birds and animals as well as people who live close to farms.

Organic Foods: What You Need to Know
Is organic food really healthier? Is it worth the expense? Find out what the labels mean and which foods give you the most bang for your buck.
The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. While the regulations vary from country to country, in the U.S., organic crops must be grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers.
Organic livestock raised for meat, eggs, and dairy products must have access to the outdoors and be given organic feed. They may not be given antibiotics, growth hormones, or any animal by-products.
